Cancun Travel Guide

Cancun is a city of two faces. One is a long strip of turquoise water and big resorts. The other is a working downtown with local food, parks and quiet Maya ruins. This guide helps you see both and pick the mix that suits your trip.

Top things to do in Cancun

Some of the best things to see in Cancun are under the sea or high above it. The Cancun Underwater Museum is an art gallery of sculptures on the seabed, so you visit it by snorkel or dive. Skywheel Cancun and the Torre Escénica de Cancún give you wide views over the lagoon and the coast. For history, go to the El Rey archaeological site and El Meco, then add the Mayan Museum of Cancún to put the ruins in context. The Hotel Zone is a sight in itself, and the Nichupté Vehicular Bridge is a new way to see the lagoon. For a rainy or slow day, try the Interactive Aquarium, the Cancun Wax Museum, the Museo del Automóvil Antiguo del Sureste or the green space of Parque Urbano Kabah.

Tours and excursions

Cancun has a wide spread of tours, and most fall into a few clear groups. Transfers and transport are the most common listings. Next come visits to archaeological and historical sites, then island trips and boat days. If you like action, there are jeep and ATV outings and theme parks. Pick by the kind of day you want, not by the longest list.
